The move

What moves, step by step.

01

Export your ChatGPT data

In ChatGPT, go to Settings > Data Controls > Export Data. OpenAI emails you a zip with a conversations.json holding your full chat history. Keep it: it is your archive, whatever you switch to. Want it readable? Our free ChatGPT to Markdown converter turns it into clean markdown files.

02

Use Gemini's native imports

Gemini offers two imports. Memory: follow gemini.google/import-memory to copy a prompt into ChatGPT and paste the response back. History: Gemini is the one AI that also accepts your full export zip (up to 5 GB, five uploads a day) so you can pick up old conversations. Mind the limits: generated images and files do not come along, project files are not supported, processing can take up to a day, it requires a personal account, and the history import is not available in the EEA, UK, or Switzerland.

03

Keep the part that matters: a living memory

Bring your ChatGPT history into MemoryPlugin in a few clicks, no scripts. And that first import is the last manual step: from then on, your new conversations keep syncing into the same archive on their own, Gemini and ChatGPT alike. From your next conversation, Gemini can draw on everything you have already discussed, and so can every other AI you use. Your context stops living inside one vendor's app.

Why switchers keep it

The part no import can carry.

An export file is not a memory. The native imports are worth using, and they hand Gemini a snapshot of what ChatGPT knew on the day you left. Snapshots age: your projects move on, your preferences shift, and the pasted summary stays frozen.

MemoryPlugin is the layer above the switch: your full chat history, synced automatically and searchable from inside Gemini, and one memory that keeps growing with you, in whichever AI you open. A memory that gets better with age, not worse. And if you end up using ChatGPT and Gemini side by side, like most people do, they finally share one brain, and one archive that stays current on both sides.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

Does Gemini import my ChatGPT conversations?+

Partly. Gemini accepts your ChatGPT export zip (up to 5 GB) and can continue old conversations, though generated images, files, and projects do not come along, and the feature is not available in the EEA, UK, or Switzerland. For a history that is searchable from every AI you use, not just Gemini, bring it into MemoryPlugin.

What happens to my ChatGPT memory?+

ChatGPT's data export does not include your saved memory entries, only your messages. To carry the memory itself, use the destination's import prompt if it has one, or ask ChatGPT to write out what it knows about you and save the result.

Will I lose my ChatGPT projects and custom setups?+

Custom instructions, projects, and platform-specific setups like custom bots do not transfer through any native import. Recreate the ones you need in Gemini, and keep the underlying context in MemoryPlugin so any AI can pick it up.

How does MemoryPlugin fit into the switch?+

Two ways. Your ChatGPT history: import it in a few clicks, it becomes searchable from inside Gemini and every other AI you use, and new chats keep syncing on their own after that. Your memory: tell any AI something once and the rest have it from your next conversation, so the next switch, if there is one, costs you nothing.

Will my new conversations stay in sync?+

Yes. Once your history is in, the browser extension keeps your archive current as you chat, in Gemini, ChatGPT, or any other supported AI. No re-exporting, no maintenance.

Can I keep using both ChatGPT and Gemini?+

That is what most people actually do, and it is where MemoryPlugin shines: one memory shared across 21+ AI tools, ChatGPT and Gemini included, so you pick the best tool per task without re-explaining yourself.
