In the Claude web app or desktop app, click your initials in the lower-left corner, open Settings > Privacy, and click Export data. Anthropic will email you a download link (it expires after 24 hours). The zip you receive contains a conversations.json file with your full chat history. That's the file you upload here. Note: export isn't available in the iOS or Android apps.
Your Claude history is a record of your thinking (research, code reviews, drafts, decisions). Exporting it as markdown gives you a portable, future-proof copy that isn't locked into any single platform, whether you're archiving, switching tools, or simply keeping your data in your own hands.
Yes, completely. Everything runs in your browser. Your conversations are never uploaded to any server. The parsing and markdown conversion happen locally on your device. We don't see, store, or transmit any of your chat content.
Each markdown file contains one conversation with its title, date, message count, and the full exchange labeled by role (User / Assistant). Claude's internal 'thinking' blocks are excluded, so the files read like the conversation you actually saw. Code blocks are preserved as-is, and attachments are shown as placeholders.
Claude's export includes your full message tree, including edits and retries. We follow the conversation's active branch (the version you'd see in the app), so the markdown matches what's on your screen.
No. Anthropic's data export covers your conversations and projects, not what Claude remembers about you. If you want a memory you keep, one that travels with you across Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, and every other AI you use, that's exactly what MemoryPlugin does.
Yes. We have free converters for ChatGPT, Grok, and TypingMind, plus a universal converter that auto-detects your export format. For chat history import from six platforms (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, TypingMind, Grok, and DeepSeek) and one memory shared across 21+ AI tools, check out MemoryPlugin.
Yes. Switch the format to JSON before downloading and each conversation becomes a simple, AI-readable JSON file with the conversation title, its source platform, an export timestamp, and every message with its role, content, and timestamp.
Yes. The converter uses a Web Worker to parse your file in a background thread, so your browser stays responsive even with years of conversations. There's no file size limit. If your browser can load it, we can convert it.
